Blenders and Juicers Buying Guide

Blenders and Juicers

There are many blender and juicer options, from hand-held stick blenders (see special guide to stick blenders) to jug options, all designed to reduce food into a pulp or puree.

Blenders

An electrical jug blender is constructed with a motorised base unit and the jug usually sits on top.  Inside the base of the jug there is a sharp blade which spins when switched on.  Jug blenders are used for purees, chopping and pulsing and are essential for bar use especially for making fruit drinks, smoothies, frappes, milkshakes and cocktails.  Some commercial jug blenders are able to crush ice, mix ice cream, and grind coffee beans.  Jug blenders are usually made out of glass or polycarbonate although glass is more durable.  There are also versions in stainless steel and while sturdier, you can’t see the mixing process as stainless steel is not transparent like glass or polycarbonate. You will find speed option settings and some premium jug blenders have built in sensor systems which adjust the speed automatically.  Additionally, some of the lids come with strainers to filter out any lumps.  Jug blenders can be awkward to clean so look for removable blades which are suitable for dishwasher use.

Points to Remember:

  • Purchase a blender that will accomplish as many tasks as possible, e.g. pureeing, grinding, chopping, emulsifying, pulsing, crushing etc. (the Blendtec Q series has up to 30 functions).
  • Buy a blender with the right capacity for your establishment.
  • If you need to add to your recipes make sure you can easily do this during operation.
  • Look for a quiet option as blenders tend to be noisy!

Juicers

Juicing is exceptionally healthy and by owning a high quality juicer you can offer your customers a real point of difference with a number of wholesome drinks packed with vitamins, minerals and nutrients.  Juicers are essential pieces of equipment for restaurants, cafes and bars because they create fantastic tasting homemade drinks for your customers, all at the touch of a button!  Manual juicers are better for small businesses or stands as they only produce a small quantity at a time and need someone operating them consistently.  Automatic juicers are the best option especially for establishments which have a high turnover of fresh juices; they are fast, energy efficient and deliver results in minutes.  Juicers working different ways, some pulverising fruit and vegetables against a spinning blade working with a metal strainer whereas others chew fruit to extract the juice.  Citrus squeezers are used for oranges, lemons and limes and ideal for bar use.

Points to Remember:

  • Look for a juicer which will cope with all greens, grasses and herbs as well as fruit and vegetables.
  • Look for a juicer that is quiet.
  • Look for a juicer that is easy to clean.
  • Look for different reamer size attachments so you can change them according to your quantity requirements.
  • Look for a juicer which will fill a variety of containers.
  • Look for a non-drip spout which prevents staining and unwanted mess.
